Routes into the sector
NGO and INGO jobs
National and international NGOs recruit for programme, technical, finance, operations, MEL, communications and leadership roles. Many advertise on their own careers pages with fixed deadlines; some recruit on a rolling basis.
United Nations system
The UN recruits staff, consultants, interns and volunteers through agency careers portals. Entry routes include internships, UN Volunteers, the Junior Professional Officer (JPO) programme for eligible nationalities and the Young Professionals Programme. Consultancies and national officer posts are common entry points for experienced professionals.
Consultancies
Short-term, deliverable-based assignments (evaluations, research, training, strategy). Strong for building a portfolio and networks. Expect to submit a technical and financial proposal.
Fellowships and graduate programmes
Structured programmes with mentoring and training, often for early-career professionals. Competitive, with fixed annual deadlines, set alerts early.
Internships and volunteering
Valuable for experience and references. Check whether a stipend, insurance and travel are covered, and never pay to secure a placement.
Grants, tenders and calls
For organisations and consultants: funding calls, requests for proposals and expressions of interest. Read eligibility carefully and use only official submission channels.
